SpeakBernard (speakbernard.com) is a language learning service. This page says what personal data we handle, why, who helps us process it, and how to ask us to delete it.
Contact
Questions and requests about your data: privacy@speakbernard.com. Write from the email address of your account so we can find it.
What we collect
- Account: your email address, and your name and picture if Google or Microsoft give them to us when you sign in. We also store how you sign in (email link, passkey, and an optional two-factor code).
- Learning data: the words and phrases you save, your progress, level test results, and settings such as interface language and text size.
- What you say and write while practising: your messages, your spoken answers as audio and as text, and the reports we make from them.
- Text you add yourself, such as a job posting, a résumé (pasted or uploaded as a file) or your own texts.
- Feedback you send through the feedback form, and the email address if you give one.
- Usage data: which pages and buttons are used, and screen recordings (see Analytics). Our hosting also keeps technical logs, for example your IP address, browser and errors.
Voice recordings
The audio of your spoken answers is sent to a speech service to be turned into text. We keep your most recent recordings (up to 10) so that you can listen to them again, and you can delete them in your account. Recordings of the spoken level test are kept together with the test result.
Why we use your data
- To provide the service you asked for: signing in, practice sessions, progress, reports and reminder emails. You can unsubscribe from reminders with the link in each email.
- To keep the service safe and its costs under control, for example abuse limits and error logs.
- To understand how the product is used and to improve it.
AI and speech providers
To answer you, transcribe speech, translate, read text aloud and assess pronunciation, we send your text or audio to outside providers. These include Google (Gemini), Groq, OpenRouter and the model companies behind it, DeepL, Microsoft Azure Speech, ElevenLabs, Speechmatics and Deepgram. Which one handles a request depends on the feature and on availability.
We send what the request needs. If you use the interview practice, that can include the text of a job posting or résumé you added. We do not train our own models on your data. We do not sell your data and we do not use it for advertising.
By signing in you agree that your voice and text are sent to these providers. To withdraw your agreement, delete your account or write to us.
Who else handles your data
Some providers process data in the United States. Where that happens, the transfer relies on the safeguards the provider offers, such as standard contractual clauses.
- Amazon Web Services: hosting, in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Neon: our database, in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Cloudflare: storage and delivery of files such as audio.
- Resend: sending sign-in and reminder emails.
- PostHog (EU): analytics.
- Google and Microsoft: only if you choose to sign in with them.
Analytics, cookies and storage
We use PostHog, hosted in the EU, to count events and to record how pages are used. It sets no cookies. It keeps a random identifier in the session storage of your browser tab, which is deleted when you close the tab. Recordings show the screen, mouse movement and clicks, including text on the screen, such as your messages in a practice session. Passwords, email and phone fields and large text boxes (a résumé, a job posting) are hidden. If you are signed in, events and recordings are linked to your account by its internal number and your email address. If your browser sends the Do Not Track signal, we do not record or count anything. To have this data deleted, write to the address above.
We use cookies and browser storage only for what the service needs: keeping you signed in, remembering your interface language, your settings and unsent drafts. Because there are no analytics cookies, we show no cookie banner.
How long we keep data
You can delete your account yourself in the app, under Account. If you ask us by email to delete your account, we delete it and its data without undue delay, and within 30 days. Copies in backups disappear on the backups' normal schedule. The same steps are on speakbernard.com/delete-account.
- Account and learning data: while your account exists.
- Practice transcripts and reports: until you delete them or your account is deleted.
- Recent recordings: the latest 10, or until you delete them.
- Technical logs: a limited time, set by our hosting.
Your rights
You can ask us for access to your data and a copy of it, to correct it, to delete it, to limit how we use it, and to object to a use. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Write to us at the address above. We may ask you to confirm it is your account.
You can also complain to your local data protection authority (in Switzerland, the FDPIC).
Children
SpeakBernard is not meant for children under 16.
